“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, "Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner." I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.” (Carl Rogers)

Open Source and Free Software Directory

Jisc have provided a first port of call for those looking for free and/or open source applications on the Internet. As they rightly say, there is a bewildering array of such software and, as a result, the directory couldn't be comprehensive. In addition, the almost daily changes in existing applications and the constant arrival of new ones means that the accuracy of information can’t be guaranteed. Still... this is a really handy guide and there were some things I hadn't tried out before - I also quite like the attempt to categorise tools, although some clearly belong to more than one category.

How to use it: the tasks in the left hand column lead to one or more appropriate applications along with information about what machines it or they will work on. Simple. Just have a play, it's all learning after all :-)
