“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, "Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner." I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.” (Carl Rogers)

Reasons to be Cheerful (Part Twenty)

What, but thee Sleep? Soft closer of our eyes!
Low murmurer of tender lullabies!
Light hoverer around our happy pillows!
Wreather of poppy buds, and weeping willows!
Silent entangler of a beauty’s tresses!
Most happy listener! when the morning blesses
Thee for enlivening all the cheerful eyes
That glance so brightly at the new sun-rise.
Dad's phantom digestive obsession has been breaking our sleep up and has deepened, spiralling into something unmanageable and a bit scary - the brain stuck in a loop revealing harsh cold light pale wan existence full in the face fear anger and frustration erupting in small uncontained jags showing at once our smallness and the vastness of our connection and of hope for life. But, then NHS tablets which were not an imposition on him but rather welcomed and I am grateful for that - not sleeping tablets, not mood enhancers exactly (I'd want those, I'd want happy pills, something mind-expanding if it's all so shite!), but to calm agitation. Not much effect yet, but they are meant to build up a store of anti-agitation karma (I think that's how they work), so we are both fingers crossed for Keats' soft closer of our eyes.

Cheerful indeed about our latest walking adventure, which was achingly lovely and uniquely tiring (see above, I should think). The Lincolnshire Wolds are indeed outstanding and beautiful.

New Street Station through the looking glass
Travels to Brum for doctorating, I captured a few chapters of Freedom to Learn on the train and in the hotel (to be posted soon) - I'm on the more interesting 'For the Teacher' section, which directly outlines Rogers' philosophy and which is a joy to re-read. I also knocked a Blake song and a Peace song ('protest song' is against, a negative, this is a positive!) into shape, both of which will grow over the next week or so and become part of the larger whole. I also slept through the night, glancing brightly at the new sun-rise. And a great and easy time with my very human supervisors, just relating, finding out that I'm on track and also being spurred to create a visual representation of my model of education as well as disturbing the flow with Heidegger, which is what he's joyously there for anyway. Beer and curry with Marios and Billy after - and we have fun!
